Original objectives
The homepage was originally built and repeatedly expanded on the assumption that insufficient content and keyword coverage were holding back rankings – the working theory was that a more complete, more keyword-rich homepage would rank better.
Why successive redesigns occurred
Each redesign was undertaken in response to ranking performance that didn’t meet expectations, with the assumption each time that the previous version’s content, structure, or keyword coverage was the limiting factor. This produced a pattern of repeated rewriting rather than a single settled homepage.
Diminishing returns
Following repeated reviews and Search Console analysis (see PassLee SEO Strategy), the project concluded homepage optimisation had reached diminishing returns: Google already understood what PassLee offered, and further homepage rewriting was not producing proportional ranking improvement.
Why the project shifted away from homepage expansion
Once relevance and homepage-keyword association were confirmed to be adequate, the limiting factor was reassessed as authority rather than content depth – leading directly to the “Shift from Homepage Optimisation to Authority Building” decision and the move toward Pass Stories, reviews, and local authority content instead of further homepage rewrites.
Homepage Lessons Learned
- More content does not necessarily produce higher rankings.
- Structure often matters more than length.
- Trust signals outperform generic keyword repetition.
- Continuous rewriting can become counterproductive – it consumes effort without addressing the actual limiting factor once that factor has shifted from relevance to authority.
