Misconceptions that changed during the project, each with the corrected understanding. See PassLee SEO Strategy, Homepage Evolution, and Google Reviews Guidance for the fuller reasoning behind each correction.
“More homepage content automatically improves rankings”
Corrected understanding: homepage content depth has diminishing returns once relevance is established; further length does not reliably translate into ranking improvement.
“More reviews alone guarantee higher rankings”
Corrected understanding: authenticity and consistency of reviews matter more than raw volume; genuine, varied reviews collected naturally over time outperform review count treated as a target in itself.
“Keyword repetition is the primary ranking driver”
Corrected understanding: once a page is correctly associated with its target keyword, further repetition adds little; authority and trust signals matter more than additional keyword density.
“Rankings should be judged over short periods”
Corrected understanding: short-term ranking fluctuations – especially during periods like security recovery – are not reliable signals of SEO quality and should not drive reactive changes.
“Every ranking movement requires action”
Corrected understanding: ranking movement should first be investigated, not reacted to. Evidence should be gathered (see Search Console Strategy and Data Before Assumptions) before any change is made. Patience is often the correct response.
